About us

The mission of Nutmeg Senior Rides is to improve the quality of life for people 50 and older and adults with visual impairments by providing members affordable, door-through-door, personal transportation. Rides to work and any other purpose and service are available 365 days a year.

Volunteers provide over 50% of our rides and are the key factor in keeping rides available and affordable, keeping program costs down, and keeping our program intrinsically connected to the community. Nutmeg Senior Rides has a specific service area for senior transportation in Connecticut.

My dad, Russ Pound, was fortunate enough to have been able to have driving services provided by Nutmeg Senior Rides for many years. He had been an avid hockey fan of the Hartford Wolf Pack since they came to Hartford after the Whalers left. When his eyesight starting to deteriorate and he was unable to drive at night, he still wanted to see his beloved Wolf Pack play their games. This was when Margaret started driving my dad back and forth to the games and this continued for the next 8 years. He would also call on her to get to many doctor appointments that he was unable to drive to, or we were not able to take him to. My mother also used the services provided by Nutmeg Senior Rides, as she stopped driving many years ago. If my dad wasn't available to take her to a doctor appointment, they would make arrangements with Margaret to get her where she needed to go. I can't even begin to explain how happy this made our entire family that my dad was still able to go see these games and see This boys" play hockey. It meant the world to him to be able to continue to do so. It was what he looked forward to all winter and we were just happy that we were fortunate enough to have these services provided to my dad for so many years. When my dad passed away this past July, it was a very difficult time for our family. It meant so much to our family when Margaret was there to give her support to us, once again. My dad truly considered her to be a dear friend. We will be forever grateful to Margaret and her wonderful staff for the wonderful service they provided, to both my parents, over the years. I am 75 years old and have been blind since birth and live at a retirement community in Windsor CT. For some of my transportation needs I utilize Greater Hartford Transit and the town of Windsor Dial-a-ride, but they do not offer 24 hour a day service. I also regularly use Nutmeg senior rides as they provide service 7 days a week 24 hours a day. To be eligible for their service you must be over the age of 50 or be visually impaired or blind. Their service is door to door and their drivers are friendly, kind and helpful and always pick me up on time. Nutmeg Senior Rides has taken me to my volunteer jobs at the library for the blind in rocky hill and CRIS radio in Windsor. They have also taken me to a low vision support group and Sacred Heart Church both located in Bloomfield. I most appreciated the time nutmeg provide me with transportation to the funeral mass of my best friend’s sister on a Saturday morning at 9 am in Granby CT. None of my family members or friends were available to take me. I have been utilizing Nutmeg since January 2009 and will continue to do so in the future. Because of their assistance I have increased my ability to travel independently.
